AfricaGIS 2021 Hackathon on Food Security and Water Resources

Get ready to take part in the 3-day hackathon jointly organized by the EO AFRICA R&D Facility, GMES&Africa and CURAT as a part of the AfricaGIS 2021 conference.

You will have the opportunity to work with the latest cloud technologies to exploit Copernicus satellite imagery on the EO AFRICA Innovation Lab and collaborate with colleagues from all over the continent.

HACKATHON?

It’s a 3-day collaborative marathon to tackle the challenges of Food Security and Water Resources, work with the latest cloud technologies, exploit Copernicus satellite imagery on EO AFRICA Innovation Lab.The AfricaGIS 2021 Hackathon will take place in November 22 to 25, 2021

AfricaGIS 2021 Hackathon

on Food Security and Water Resources

  • Centre Universitaire de Recherche et d’Application en Télédétection (CURAT), Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

We are looking forward to your innovative ideas on how earth observation can assist the solution of local, regional, or continental scale challenges in food security and water resources. You can choose to focus on one of these thematic areas or propose your own:

  • Freshwater resources dynamics and water scarcity
  • Coastal monitoring (water quality, coastal changes, ship detection)
  • Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural production
  • Conflict and food security – linking decrease in agricultural production to armed conflicts

Travel and accommodation costs will be sponsored for all registrants selected to participate in the hackathon. In addition, you will be able to attend the opening day of the AfricaGIS 2021 conference and present your final hackathon project during a main conference session on 25 November.

We aim to engage researchers and foster collaboration between participants of diverse backgrounds therefore you will be divided in teams based on your expertise and research interests.

The main language of the hackathon will be English but translation to French will provided by our support teams!

Schedule

17 November, one week prior to the start of the hackathon:

Opening of the chat room and introductory (kick-off) webinar introducing the Hackathon and tools and data you will have at your disposal during the hackathon.

You will have the opportunity to discuss the topic of your project with your team on a dedicated chat platform before you arrive to Abidjan.

Main Hackathon days:

After a short introductory session on Monday morning (22 November) you will be able to start working on your project with technical and EO science support:

  • on Tuesday (23 November), you will have a day off from the hackathon to attend the AfricaGIS 2021 conference opening ceremony.
  • on Wednesday and Thursday (24 – 25 November), you can continue with the development of your project.
  • on Thursday afternoon, you will present your projects at a dedicated session at the AfricaGIS 2021 venue.
