Assessing potential use of water resources in an African river basin

EO AFRICA R&D Facility Online Course

Assessing potential use of water resources in an African river basin

Introduction to the course

This online course will show participants how to relate the water balance components (precipitation, evaporation, run-off and groundwater recharge) to identify surpluses of water and possible potential usage of those water resources in the area. The participants are free to conduct the case study on a river catchment (watershed) of their choice. By the end of the course, the students will be able to delineate a river catchment, download and process precipitation and evaporation (evapotranspiration) data for the area and conduct the assessment of potential water resources use based on the land-use land cover classification map. In addition to those practical skills, the students will learn about the pipelines and models that led to the mentioned datasets.

The course will use a set of short movies, webinars, and presentations in combination with reading material and reference articles to existing materials and websites. Quizzes and hands-on practicals will be mandatory to complete training and receive the certificate of completion.
